Hippy at Heart

Hello all! I am still alive, I’ve just been swamped by my Masters dissertation. I can only apologise for my absence and thank you for those who’ve stuck by me. Enough procrastinating and apologising and on to the point of today’s blog post! Now, I am the sort of person that doesn’t really keep clothes for ‘best’ – I wear whatever I want, whenever I want, crazy British weather permitting. Sometimes, therefore, I wear things that other people would only really wear in certain situations and people give me weird looks. For example, I’ve been wanting a really pretty boho/hippy style headdress for some time. Not because I am going to a festival to wear it only once or twice, but because I like anything that adorns my head, is slightly ostentatious (my friends will vouch for this part of my personality!), and satisfies my childhood dream of feeling like a princess.

Enter the River Island feather and beaded headdress that you can see in these pictures! I was mooching about the jewellery section in River Island, saw the headdress, and then instantly fell in love with it. I had to walk out of the shop without it as, in case you missed me saying it a million times before, I’m doing an MA and have NO money of my own. I told my boyfriend about it and he went back and got it for me, because he’s a sweetheart. That was a month ago and I’ve worn it twice in that time, despite not having been anywhere special. Life’s too short to keep things for a special occasion; I just try to get my wear out of things. If I don’t think I would wear it in a variety of social or daily situations, I simply don’t buy it as I can’t afford to have unworn things in my wardrobe.

As I said, I’ve worn this twice and each time I feel as if people are looking at me as if I’m a mental patient on day release. So, what’s your take on fashion and headdresses? Would you only wear one to a festival? Or not at all? Or, like me, would you wear it and just let people think you’re bonkers? Thoughts, please!

  1. I love it, I would not have the confidence to pull wearing something like that off but it suits you down to the ground.

    1. Thanks Sarah! I think you would be able to pull something like this off, but I suppose it is all about confidence. I used to be a goth and have people stare at me for that reason, so I suppose I've gotten so used to the attention of other people's stares, that I just don't let it bother me any more? I don't think of myself as a confident person, as I have so many insecurities, but I suppose I've gotten to that point in my life where I just don't worry about what others think. Jury's out on that one! Maybe I am just a closet exhibitionist ;)

  2. It's beautiful. It looks fantastic on you. Do the beads jump about on your forehead when you walk? Sorry, that question just popped into my head (this is the kind of thing I think about before buying accessories).
Maybe people stare because they're jealous that they don't have the confidence to wear a head-dress as regular day wear.
I would wear a head-dress on a normal day; although perhaps not to my current work (it would be impractical), or to placements next year, because I don't think it'd count as "formal dress", but at weekends and evening: totally!
Great to read a new blog post. I'd been missing them (completely understand the need to focus on the MA though)!

    1. Hi Charlotte! Lovely to hear from you :) And thank you, I'm glad you think it suits me. Yes, I've missed blogging, but the MA had to come first. I'm glad everyone seems to understand!

The beads move when I turn my head, especially if I turn quickly. When I walk they do move a little, but not in an annoying way. Well, they don't annoy me, anyway. The feathers can get trapped in bag handles, so it's best to place them on the side of your head opposite to the shoulder you wear your bag on. Also, if you turn quickly, they do smack the side of your face! Haha. I put up with that though as they look nice.
